How far is Uluru from Alice Springs?
Further than most first-time visitors expect. Uluru is 465 km from Alice Springs by road, and Parks Australia puts the direct drive at about 5.5 hours.1 So how far is Uluru from Alice Springs in practice? A full working day there and back, before you have spent a minute at the rock. That is the honest starting point for any plan to see it from the town.
The road is not empty of interest, though. You pass Mount Connor, the flat-topped sandstone monolith that Anangu call Atila and locals nickname Fooluru, because so many drivers mistake it for Uluru.2 Roadhouses mark the way, and Curtin Springs, the closest to the park, lies approximately 100 km from Yulara.3
The day trip is built around that distance: an early start, a long coach ride, a compressed afternoon at the rock, the sunset as the climax, and a late return. It is a big day, but for travellers whose time in the Red Centre is short, it is a way to see the sunset at Uluru without a night at the resort.

The day trip booked on this page
The listing this page books is the day trip from Alice Springs with a barbecue dinner. It starts from $280, is rated 4.68 from 825 reviews, includes pick-up, and you can cancel without charge until 24 hours before it starts. Pick-up covers 23 locations in Alice Springs, from hotels and motels to caravan parks and hostels.
The coach ride is about 5 hours each way. The first break is at Erldunda, where you can buy breakfast, and there is a lunch break in the Yulara town centre before the touring begins. Breakfast and lunch are yours to buy; carry snacks and plenty of water as well, because the coach legs are long.
At the rock the day follows the same sacred-sites order as the evening tours from the resort: the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre, a guided Mala Walk, then Mutitjulu Waterhole, and finally a sunset barbecue at the Uluru Coach Sunset Viewing Area with sparkling wine, beer or a soft drink. Then the coach turns for the long drive back to Alice Springs.

The afternoon at the rock
The Cultural Centre comes first, and it is worth arriving curious. Parks Australia suggests allowing at least two hours to explore it properly, which a day tour cannot give you, so treat your stop as a first look and pick up a visitor guide at the information desk.5 The centre opens daily at 7.00 am and closes at 5.45 pm.6
The Mala Walk runs along the base of the rock; Parks Australia's own rangers also lead it for free, starting at 8.00 am in the hot half of the year (October to April) and at 10.00 am in the cool months (May to September), if you ever return with more time.7 On the tour your guide leads the walk and shares the stories tied to each spot along the way. Walk slowly, look closely and save the questions for the waterhole, where there is shade to stand in.
Mutitjulu Waterhole is among the rare spots around Uluru where water stays all year, reached by the short Kuniya walk from its car park.8 Its creation story tells of Kuniya, a woma python woman, fighting Liru, a venomous brown snake man, on this very ground.9 After hours on the coach, its shade and quiet are a welcome contrast.

Sunset and dinner before the drive home
The tour ends at the coach sunset viewing area, the car park reserved for buses and coaches after 4.00 pm.13 Here the barbecue is served while the rock changes colour, so dinner and the sunset happen together rather than one after the other. It is the moment the whole long day leads up to. Have your camera ready before the food arrives, eat while the colour is still building, and look up from the plate when the red is at its deepest: the light changes faster than you expect, and the barbecue will still be there.
Parks Australia describes how the parking area gets busy with bus tours at sunset, and suggests the dune walk of 500 m, about 30 minutes return, to get away from the crowd.17 On a tour with dinner served at the coach, you will probably stay with your group; if there is time, a few minutes on the dune give you a quieter view of Uluru and Kata Tjuta together.18
Then comes the long ride back. With the coach taking about 5 hours each way, you return to Alice Springs late at night, so sleep on the way home if you can and plan a slow morning the next day. Do not book an early flight out of Alice Springs for the following morning. A pillow, a light jacket and a charged phone with downloaded music make the dark kilometres pass much faster.
One day or more?
The day trip is the efficient choice if you have one free day in Alice Springs and want the sunset at the rock without a hotel night at Yulara. What it cannot give you is time: no sunrise, no Kata Tjuta, no slow walk around the base. If any of those matter, consider a multi-day trip instead.
From Alice Springs or Yulara, a 2-day camping tour of Uluru and Kata Tjuta starts from $536 and is rated 4.76 from 57 reviews. For more time still, a 4-day adventure tour sold as Rock to Rock starts from $589, rated 4.85 from 221 reviews. Both spend a night or more in the area, which means a sunrise as well as a sunset. Camping trips also mean a night under the open desert sky, something a day tour heading home after dinner cannot offer.
A third way is to split the journey: a coach from Alice Springs to Ayers Rock Resort takes 6 hours, after which you can stay a few nights and join an evening tour from the resort. That turns the long road into a one-way trip and gives you the sunset without the rush.
Getting through a long day in the heat
Parks Australia is direct about heat. Heat of 30°C or more is normal in the park and summer days can pass 40°C; its advice is to walk in the cool of the day, keep off the tracks between 2.30 pm and 6.30 pm, and in summer stop walking by 11.00 am.1920 A day trip from Alice Springs arrives in the heat of the afternoon, so take that seriously.
Drink before you feel thirsty. On foot, Parks Australia wants you drinking a litre of water an hour, every person, as a minimum, and wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen and sturdy shoes.21 Bring your own bottles from Alice Springs and refill whenever the coach stops; a cool bag with frozen water keeps it drinkable for longer on a hot afternoon.
Finally, sort out your park pass before the tour. From 1 April 2026 the pass is not included and you must buy it and bring it with you, a digital copy is fine. Adults pay $38 for 3 days and children and teenagers under 18 go free.22
