Uluru airport, flights and the road in
The Uluru airport sits beside the resort town of Yulara, so you can land in the afternoon and watch the rock turn red the same evening. This guide covers how to get to Uluru by air and by road, and what the first hours look like.

The airport at Yulara
Yulara has its own airport, officially called Ayers Rock/Connellan Airport, with the code AYQ.1 Searchers often call it the Uluru airport, and for a visitor that is exactly what it is: the doorway to the national park. The resort is about 10 minutes away by road, and from there Uluru itself is a 20-minute drive.5 That short distance changes how you can plan a short visit, because a flight and a sunset fit into the same afternoon.
The terminal is small and practical. It offers complimentary Wi-Fi, free return transfers to and from Ayers Rock Resort, car hire kiosks, a café, a gift shop and restrooms.4 Terminal hours are 7:45am to 4:30pm, with closing times that shift with airline schedules and daylight saving time.6 If you are collecting a hire car, do it before the desks close for the day.
One cultural note before you land: the north-east face of Uluru, the side you often see from the window on a commercial flight, is ground of the highest cultural sensitivity.7 Anangu ask that it is photographed only in wide shots from a distance, so keep the phone camera zoomed out if you take a picture from your seat.8
Direct flights and flight times
Parks Australia currently lists direct flights to Yulara from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns.1 Parks Australia gives approximate flight times of 3 hours from Sydney, 2 hours 40 minutes from Melbourne, 3 hours 15 minutes from Brisbane and 2 hours 50 minutes from Cairns.2 Airlines that fly to Yulara include Virgin Australia, Qantas and Jetstar.9
Sydney to Uluru takes about half a day door to door once you add check-in, the flight and the short transfer. If you are travelling from overseas or from another Australian city, your flight will probably connect through one of those cities.9 Leave a generous gap between connecting flights: on a remote route a missed connection can cost you a day, and with it a sunset.
Schedules change by season and airline, so check the timetable before you plan the rest of your stay. A flight that lands by mid-afternoon lets you drop your bags, buy your park pass online and still be at the viewing area for the evening light. A late arrival is better spent resting, with the sunset saved for the next day. Either way, check the local time on your phone when you land, and note your pick-up time for the evening in writing, so a tired first afternoon does not end with a missed coach.

Alice Springs to Uluru by road
The other classic way in is overland. Uluru is 465 km from Alice Springs by road, which Parks Australia puts at about 5.5 hours of direct driving.3 The drive is part of the experience: long straight stretches, red earth, and the flat-topped Mount Connor, which Anangu call Atila and locals nickname Fooluru because it fools first-time visitors into thinking they have arrived.13
If you drive yourself, the nearest roadhouse to the park is Curtin Springs, approximately 100 km from Yulara.14 You can also make the trip part of the Red Centre Way, a 1135 km driving loop that starts and finishes in Alice Springs.10 Hire cars are available at Ayers Rock Airport, Yulara and Alice Springs, but Yulara has only a limited number, so Parks Australia strongly recommends booking a few weeks ahead.15
Without a car, coach transfers run between the two. One transfer takes 6 hours from Alice Springs to Ayers Rock Resort, with commentary, a roadhouse stop and views of Atila. Another runs in both directions in 5 to 6 hours, with an air-conditioned coach and an onboard toilet, and stops at Erldunda Roadhouse where you can buy food.

Timing a coach so you still see the sunset
The coach timetables show how the road shapes your evening. On the either-direction transfer, the Alice Springs pick-up is about 7 AM from March to November and 8 AM from December to February, arriving at Ayers Rock Resort around 12:30 PM or 1:30 PM. That leaves the afternoon free for check-in and a sunset tour on the day you arrive.
The return direction is built around the sunset. The coach to Alice Springs leaves Ayers Rock just after sunset and reaches Alice Springs about 12 AM from March to October or 1 AM from November to February. Its approximate pick-up times run from 6:30 to 6:45 PM between 3 May and 21 July, and from 8:00 to 8:15 PM between 14 December and 11 February.
If you prefer a daytime return, the one-way coach from Ayers Rock Resort to your Alice Springs hotel takes 6 hours and stops at a roadhouse where afternoon tea is at your own expense. For a first visit, arriving by coach and leaving by air, or the other way round, gives you the long road once without doing it twice.
Getting around once you are there
There are no taxis or other public transport around the park, but all roads are sealed, so a normal 2WD hire car is enough.11 Without one you can join a bus tour or buy an Uluru hop on hop off bus pass.11 Within the resort you can walk, and a free shuttle bus runs between the accommodation and the town square in Yulara.12
Driving times from Ayers Rock Resort are short by outback standards: about 20 minutes to Uluru, 45 minutes to Kata Tjuta and 10 minutes to the airport.5 The two sunset viewing areas are 15 to 20 minutes from Yulara.24 Remember that the park closes at night and every visitor must be out by closing time.25
Before you drive in, buy your park pass. Adults pay $38 for 3 days, children and teenagers under 18 go free, and the pass works on paper or on your phone; at the gate, keep left and scan its code to drive in.2627 On a tour, check whether the pass is included: the sunset tour booked on this site does not include it.
Your first evening, step by step
If you land in the early afternoon, the simplest plan is to let someone else drive. The booked tour on this site leaves Ayers Rock Resort with hotel pick-up and covers the base of Uluru, Mutitjulu Waterhole and the Cultural Centre before the sunset, with drinks at the viewing area. It lasts 5 hours and starts from $147.
If time is tight, a 1.5-hour sunset run leaves the resort in the late afternoon and brings you back in time for a dinner booking, from $77. Either way, carry water and a warm layer; the listing for the booked tour asks for at least 1 liter of water and a jumper on winter evenings.
And if you would rather arrive in style, the sunset helicopter flight leaves from the same airport you landed at, after a hotel pick-up and a short bus ride. Whatever you choose, the point of flying straight to Yulara is exactly this: your first evening in the Red Centre can end with the rock in front of you, not with another day on the road.
