Why the evening is the time to fly
Seen from the ground, Uluru fills your view and Kata Tjuta is a line of domes on the horizon. From the air the two stand in one picture, with the red dunes running between them. In the late afternoon that picture gains depth: the low sun throws long shadows from every ridge and dune, and the rock's colour deepens as you watch. The desert, which looks flat and uniform from the road, turns out to be a pattern of parallel dunes, dry creek lines and dark patches of scrub, and the rock sits in the middle of it like an island.
The size becomes real up there. Uluru stands 348 metres over the flat country around it and measures 9.4 km round its base, while the tallest dome of Kata Tjuta stands 546 metres above the plain.23 Parks Australia also notes that both are the tips of huge slabs of rock that continue underground for up to 6 km, which is easier to imagine when you see how abruptly they rise from flat ground.4
An evening flight also fits neatly around everything else. A morning in the park, a rest through the heat, and a flight at the end of the day leaves your evening free for dinner. It is a short, expensive treat, so the sections below help you choose the flight length that matches what you want to see. The difference between the options is mostly in what lies beyond Uluru: whether you also reach the domes of Kata Tjuta, their gorges, or the salt lake further out.

The sunset flight booked on this page
The listing this page books is the sunset helicopter tour over Uluru and Kata Tjuta. It lasts 36 minutes, starts from $291 and is rated 4.89 from 162 reviews. You are picked up from your hotel at Ayers Rock Resort and taken by air-conditioned bus to Ayers Rock Airport, where the crew gives a safety briefing before boarding.
The route takes in Walpa Gorge, the Valley of the Winds and the western side of Kata Tjuta. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours ahead and you can reserve now and pay later. That flexibility matters out here: if a dusty or cloudy afternoon rolls in, you can move the flight to another evening of your stay without losing money, as long as you decide in time.
The listed departure times are approximate: the operator contacts you to confirm your flight and meeting time, and tries to match your preferred slot without guaranteeing it. Keep your evening flexible around the confirmed time, and do not book a sunset dinner pick-up too close to it. If the confirmed slot lands earlier than you hoped, you still get the warm afternoon light over the dunes, and the colour change can wait for the next evening at the viewing area.

Shorter flights for a first look

It also includes hotel pick-up, a coach to the airport and a safety briefing, and the listing mentions bubble windows for photos.
The 25-minute helicopter experience adds Kata Tjuta to Uluru. Its listing gives 1 hour in total, starts from $221 and is rated 4.80 from 588 reviews. Guests weighing over 125 kg must book directly with the operator so a suitable seat can be assigned.
For the longest look, a 1.5-hour flight adds Lake Amadeus to Uluru and Kata Tjuta and can be booked at sunrise, at sunset or during the day. It needs at least three passengers and transfers from every Ayers Rock Resort hotel except Emu Walk Apartments, and it starts from $522.

What the flights never do, and why
The sunset flight and the shorter scenic flights say the same thing about the route: the flights do not go directly over, nor completely around, Uluru or Kata Tjuta, because of the cultural sensitivity of both. Do not expect to look straight down onto the top of the rock; the views are angled and taken from a respectful distance.
This matches the way Parks Australia asks visitors to treat the rock on the ground. The north-east face, the stretch between Kantju Gorge and Kuniya Piti, ranks among the most sensitive parts of the park, and airline passengers see exactly that side on the way in or out.17 Anangu ask that it is photographed only in wide shots from a distance, leaving out anything on the upper left of the rock.18
So frame your photos wide. Show the rock in its landscape, with dunes, sky and Kata Tjuta, rather than zooming in on features. Through the window a wide lens also deals better with reflections and the curve of the glass than a long one, and it keeps the whole scene in the frame while the helicopter turns. If you plan to share the images publicly for commercial purposes, Parks Australia requires a media permit.19
Practical details before you fly
All of these flights need you to manage steps and platforms to get in and out of the helicopter. If you have limited mobility, ask the operator before booking how boarding works and how much help is available. It is better to know in advance than to discover a high step on the tarmac with the engine already running.
There is a 2-person minimum on the sunset flight and the shorter scenic flights; if you book alone you are paired with other passengers. That is worth knowing if you hoped for a private flight. By road the resort is only about 10 minutes from the airport, so the transfer is short.1
Wear dark clothing if you can, to cut reflections on the windows, and keep your camera strap around your wrist. Sunglasses help with the low sun on the evening flight. Charge your phone and empty its memory before you leave the hotel; nothing is more frustrating than a full card halfway along the gorge. Leave large bags at the hotel; you will want both hands free for the camera and the view.
Helicopter or the ground: how to choose
A flight shows scale and the shape of the whole park; the ground shows texture, colour and the quiet. Neither replaces the other, and the evening light flatters both. You can also do both: a helicopter over Uluru on one evening, and the sunset from the viewing area on the next. If you only have one evening, decide which matters more to you, the bird's-eye view or the slow colour change from the car park.
Price is the other factor. The shortest flight starts from $162 while the sunset tour booked on this site's home page, with its waterhole walk and drinks, starts from $147.
If you are tempted by a drone instead, forget it: drones and other remote-controlled devices are prohibited in the park under the EPBC Act, and penalties apply.6 A scenic flight is how you see Uluru from above, flown at the distance the listings describe.
