Guide · Where to stay
There is no bed inside the national park, so the Uluru resort at Yulara is home base for almost every visit. Here is where to stay at Uluru, from a five-star hotel to a tent pitch, and what each means for your sunset evenings.

Quick answer
Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park has no accommodation at all, so the question of where to stay at Uluru has one main answer: Ayers Rock Resort, about a 10-minute drive from the park and a 10-minute drive from the airport.1 The resort is a small town in its own right, with a supermarket, several restaurants, a hairdresser and a day spa.1
Yulara sits outside the national park, about ten minutes by car from the entry station, and most of the town is the resort itself, an Aboriginal-owned enterprise that provides accommodation, restaurants and other services to park visitors.6 More than 40% of its workforce are Indigenous employees.7 Staying here means your money goes to an Aboriginal-owned business. Ask at reception what is on in the resort during the hot middle of the day, and keep your energy for the evening light.
The resort is compact enough to walk around, and a free shuttle bus links the accommodation with the town square.8 For sunset evenings that is ideal: tour coaches collect you at your hotel, and the sunset viewing areas are 15 to 20 minutes away by car if you drive yourself.9
At the top of the resort is Sails in the Desert, a five-star hotel that sets out to combine modern luxury with the colour and wisdom of Anangu culture.10 Desert Gardens Hotel is a 4.5-star hotel set among ghost gums and native gardens, and its guestrooms have the resort's only views of Uluru.3 If seeing the rock from your room matters, that is the hotel to ask about when you book, and it is worth requesting a room that faces it.
The Lost Camel Hotel offers compact, modern studio-style rooms with a king-zipper bed, a good fit for couples who will spend their days out in the park.11 The Outback Hotel has air-conditioned rooms with private ensuite bathrooms, in configurations for families and friends.12 Beside it, the Outback Lodge provides shared hostel-style accommodation for backpackers.13
For families or longer stays, Emu Walk Apartments are four-star, fully serviced one- and two-bedroom apartments that can take up to five people.14 Having a kitchen is a real advantage here: you can pack your own picnic for the car sunset area, which Parks Australia suggests, along with bringing your own chairs.15

There is nowhere to stay inside the national park, but plenty of options at the nearby Ayers Rock Resort, about a 10-minute drive from the park and a 10-minute drive from the airport.
Longitude 131 is a luxury lodge where guests stay in tents with views of Uluru from the end of the bed.18 It is a very different kind of stay: the experience is built around the landscape, and the rock is part of every evening without leaving your room.
There is one thing to know if you photograph from there. Parks Australia lists Longitude 131 among the places from which you see Uluru's north-east face, along with Ayers Rock Resort itself, and Parks Australia counts that face among the park's most culturally delicate places.19 Anangu ask that it is photographed only in wide shots from a distance, with the features on the rock's upper left kept out of frame.20
The same applies wherever you stay in Yulara. A wide view of the rock on the horizon at dusk is welcome; a zoomed-in shot of its features from your balcony is not. Parks Australia adds that the best time for the north-east face is 1 to 2 hours before sunset, when natural shadows hide the sacred sites.21

Camping at Uluru means the resort campground, because there is nowhere to camp in the national park itself.2 Ayers Rock Campground has powered and unpowered sites and two-bedroom cabins.4 Its facilities include a swimming pool, a playground, barbecues, an outdoor kitchen and a self-service laundry.17
For a more remote experience, Curtin Springs, about 100 km from the park, is a roadhouse, wayside inn and cattle station with affordable rooms and campsites.5 It is also the nearest roadhouse to the park and runs tours to Mount Connor.30 The trade-off is the drive: every sunset means a long return in the dark, so it suits a road trip more than a short visit. On the other hand, a cattle station under a dark sky is its own kind of outback evening, and the long drive to the rock passes the same red dunes you came for.
For the cold, Parks Australia tells visitors to pack warm layers, and a beanie and gloves in the winter months.33 Desert nights in winter are serious: the park's winter nights can drop to −7°C, so a summer sleeping bag will not do.34 The campground is also a good base for stargazing, since you are already outside when the sky darkens.
Where you sleep shapes how you see the sunset. Several tours collect guests from the main hotels; the 7-hour day tour with a sunset barbecue, for example, picks up at Desert Gardens Hotel, Ayers Rock Campground, the Outback Hotel and Sails in the Desert. The sunset tour booked on this site departs Ayers Rock Resort with hotel pick-up and drop-off.
Check pick-up rules if you choose an apartment. The 1.5-hour helicopter flight over Lake Amadeus, for instance, includes transfers from every resort hotel except Emu Walk Apartments. It is the kind of detail that is easy to miss when you book the room and the tours separately. Before you pay for either, check the pick-up list of every tour you plan, and if your hotel is missing, ask the operator where the nearest pick-up point is.
If you are driving, any hotel works: Uluru is about 20 minutes from the resort, the airport 10 and Kata Tjuta 45.16 Hire cars are limited in Yulara, though, so book one a few weeks ahead if you want to chase the light on your own schedule.35
The resort's restaurants cover most budgets. At the simple end, the Outback BBQ and Bar at the Outback Hotel and Lodge lets you choose your own cut of meat or fish and cook it yourself, open from 11.00 am until late.36 Inside the national park, by contrast, food comes only from the Ininti Cafe at the Cultural Centre or the AAT Kings barbecue dinner.37
That makes the timing of dinner part of the plan. If your sunset tour brings you back to the resort, book a table for afterwards; the 1.5-hour sunset run explicitly returns you in time for a dinner booking. If you would rather eat outside under the stars, see our dinner page for the barbecue evenings, which collect you from the resort and bring you back after dark.
A self-catering apartment or a campground pitch gives you a third option: buy food at the resort supermarket, pack a picnic and eat it at the car sunset area while the rock changes colour.115 It costs little, and with the rock in front of you it may well be the evening you remember longest.
